Manchester United will have big shoes to fill in the summer when they head into the transfer market in search of a player to replace Nemanja Vidic, who has been the captain of the club in the last few years.
Replacing Vidic will be a tall order since the Serbian defender has been impressive for United since coming to the club in 2006. Former Manchester United midfielder David McCreery says that it is definitely a big job for United, but he is of the opinion that the club already have a player capable of filling in the boots. According to him, defender Jonny Evans is capable of replacing Vidic as the regular centre back for United.
The club are expected to go through several changes in the summer and they have already announced that the exit of Vidic to Inter Milan on a free transfer. The likes of Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand also linked with moves away from the club, as United are set to field a new back four for next campaign. The likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are young and still coming through the ranks. However, Jonny Evans has been a first-team regular for the last few years and McCreery says that United should first look at making him the successor rather than bringing in a new name.
“Jonny will definitely be in that defence for a long time, and especially for Northern Ireland as well, it’s just that he has had a few injuries. Unfortunately, if you look at it, these have come at an important time as well. Saying that, Jonny has had experience and is not a young lad anymore. He’s gained that experience by playing at a young age at United and experienced winning things too. I think United could do with him coming back as quickly as possible,” said McCreery.
