New Inter Milan signing Nemanja Vidic has claimed that he should have joined an Italian club several years ago. Vidic became one of the best defenders in the world during his extended spell at Manchester United. He formed a great partnership with England international Rio Ferdinand in the team that won numerous titles including the Champions League. After eight years at Old Trafford, he finally switched to Italy with a free transfer to Inter Milan. He was recently unveiled at a press conference where he claimed that he should have joined Italian football several years ago.
Vidic was seen as a player made for the Premier League with his no-nonsense defending and physical approach. Italian leagues are much more tactical than the Premier League and some reckon that Vidic may struggle to bring back his glory days. The Serbian defender has been suffering from injury problems in recent years, which were one of the reasons for his Manchester United exit. However, at just 32 years old, he still has a decent amount of time left in top-level football. His main priority will be to get Inter Milan back into the Italian elite.
Since winning the Champions League in 2010, Inter have been slowly slipping down the table and will be without both Champions League and Europa league in the coming season. “I should have arrived to Italy many years ago. Finally I have the opportunity to play here. I don’t think this is a step backwards in my career, I believe this is a step forward for me. Italian football suits my game well and, as I said before, I have joined one of the big European clubs. English football is different to Italian but that doesn’t mean that Italian is more simple,” said the former Spartak Moscow defender in his first press conference as the Inter Milan player.
