Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has spoken about the importance of returning to Champions League for his new club Inter Milan. The Serbian defender moved to Italy on a free transfer, thus bringing an end to his long spell at United. Vidic came to United in 2006 and was part of numerous title winning teams before becoming the captain of the club. Even though he has suffered several injury problems in the last two years, he still remains a defender at the top of his game. Inter Milan moved in quickly to secure his signature.
A player like Vidic is a key necessity for Inter right now given that the club has been struggling to reach its former glory days in the last four years. Since winning the Champions League, Italian league, and the Coppa Italia in one season, Inter have fallen a long way. They are now struggling to get into the top three of the table. The first half of last season seemed extremely promising, but even Walter Mazzarri was unable to prevent the slide in the second half.
Recognising the need for leaders in the team, the club has brought in Vidic. The Serbian defender says that it is vital that Inter get back into the Champions League.
“The objection of qualifying for the Champions League is within our reach. We will do everything we can to achieve this goal. We are working well and for now everything is going well so we’ll see when the season starts. I have settled in very well. The players, staff and fans have all helped me to feel at home here,” said the defender, who recently faced his former club in a friendly match. At just 32 years of age, Inter will be hoping that Vidic can carry on playing for the next four years.
